Camp Goes Global

South African Vochellis at Camp Starlight! It was a very happy 4th of July weekend at Camp Starlight in Starlight, Pennsylvania! South African camp counselors and visitors celebrated the holiday together as they shared their experiences from Camp Sizanani with the American camp staff. A huge thanks to David Miller, our camp strategist, for his tireless advocacy and determination to get our Vochellis to US camp this summer!

Report from the Field

Launch of the Vochelli Academy! We are thrilled to announce the launch of our Vochelli Academy. This program will provide our Camp Sizanani staff and volunteers with personal and professional development training across a variety of topics, including mental and sexual health, project management, entrepreneurship, CV creation, transformational teaching methods, needs assessment, and goal setting. The program is designed to strengthen the skills and expertise our Vochellis (camp counselors) need to be strong, thoughtful, innovative leaders both at Camp Sizanani and in their personal pursuits. We wish the best of luck to our ten inaugural inductees!

This Month In Youth Clubs

Learning About Leadership This month, campers at our Youth Clubs learned about personal strengths and leadership. Games and discussion groups helped the kids identify their own strengths and weaknesses and learn how to leverage these in setting goals. Campers also discussed the qualities of a good leader, and how to be a good leader in one’s daily life.

Exploring Entrepreneurship Our Vochellis helped bolster campers’ entrepreneurial spirit through lessons in marketing and banking at Youth Clubs during the month of July. Campers learned the basics of product marketing, price determination, target audiences, and business location considerations. Though they are young, learning these skills early allows campers to recognize the influence of these factors on the products and services they use every day, setting a solid foundation for deeper learning — and entrepreneurship — later on. In addition, campers also learned about the different types of bank accounts, interest, and choosing a bank. Together, these lessons foster financial literacy that will serve campers as they transition to young adults.

Music and Motion at Morning Drills Our Youth Club members start every Saturday session with their morning drill — a short, fun, group workout led by our Vochellis — that gets everyone energized to start the day. After getting their blood pumping, campers are more excited and better able to focus on their workshops. Later in the day, campers take a break from regular activities to swim, solve puzzles, play board games, skip rope, or play soccer and netball. These activities are not only fun breaks from lessons, but teach campers about playing fair, making friends, and working as a team.
